Platters

As a general description, a platter is a large shallow bowl or deep plate, depending on your point of view.

I've included a sample of my work in the gallery below.  My creative process is based on the timber, what details, shapes, knots or defects the wood has and make the platter shape to best show off the wood offers.  The plan in my head at the start isn't always how it finishes!

What you think is a defect can also be the most decorative feature you've ever seen!  The pictures below are a mixture of Walnut, Rippled Sycamore and Elm, all of which once grew in Suffolk.

The larger pieces are 16"/40cm diameter although I can produce larger of requested.  Timber for large platters has to be very dry or wet turned, stored for at least 18 months to dry and then re-turned to ensure the piece remains flat to the table which can come at a cost, however, they are stunning centrepeices for any table or room.
